PRIDE GUIDE 1994 GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE 7

Proudly celebrating lesbian and gay life

The Gay '90s are upon us! We are everywhere! We're on television sitcoms, guests on TV talk shows, out in the Clinton administration, and the subject of major marketing and consumer surveys. We've made our mark as a community that has significant power at the voting booth-at the national, state and local levels. We are consumers who cannot be overlooked and will exert our buying power. We are a group which will not tolerate discrimination.

We have national products advertising in our newspapers and magazines. We have national foundations running Public Service Announcements on radio and television, advocating lesbian, gay and bisexual rights. We have created an atmosphere where queer superstars like k.d. lang and Melissa Etheridge feel Proud and Safe enough to come out publicly; an atmosphere where Joseph Steffan can challenge the U. S.government on discrimination in the militaryand win! This affirms what we already

know. We are not asking for special rights. We are simply living our lives and asking that our basic civil rights be protected along with those of every other American.

On Saturday, June 11, Pride '94, Northeast Ohio's Sixth Annual Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual March and Festival will give us a chance to celebrate our Pride in who we are as unique individuals within a diverse community-a Community of Pride. We will gather to march for civil rights and celebrate with a Festival of entertainment, vendors, organizational displays, speakers, dancing and pure fun and enjoyment. Most importantly, we will gather together in Pride to celebrate Gay History Month.

Pride is about infusing a strong sense of hope and belonging in our lives. It's about helping to create a community of deeper understanding and acceptance of one of life's greatest treasures: our very identity as Proud lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgendered peoples.

Cruise highlights GIFT bowling tournament

Cruising the North Coast and the Cuyahoga along Cleveland's Flats in June is becoming quite the traditional thing to do. Once again, the Gay-Lesbian Invitational Fellowship Tournament is sponsoring the GIFT-Pride Cruise. For the ninth year, the GIFT committee has been working for the better part of a year to raise enough money to be able to bring events such as the cruise to our community.

The same weekend that we are reveling in and exploring our lifestyle and its possibilities, the GIFT bowling tournament is bringing together 200 men and women from all over the U.S. and Canada in the spirit of fellowship and competition. Many of these bowlers say that they would never miss one of Cleveland's tournaments because they have such a good time with the friendly people here. We hope to see as many of you as possible during the weekend beginning with the registration party and carnival at Legends (11719 Detroit at W. 117th St.) on Friday evening June 10 from 7 pm to midnight. And then the bowling which takes place at Buckeye Lanes (24488 Lorain Rd.) Saturday morning from 11 am to 4 pm and Sunday from 10 am to 1 pm.

Make sure you don't miss out on the cruise on Saturday evening by waiting till the last minute to get a ticket. We have a limited number of tickets that we can sell

and we have sold out in the past. Tickets may be purchased at a number of different bars and gay business for $16 each or for $20 at the gate, if available. One dollar of each ticket sale will be donated to Health Issues Taskforce. The ship will start boarding at 6:30 pm at North Coast Harbor and will depart promptly at 7. We hope you'll join us for as much of the weekend as possible. If you have any questions, please call 252-8933.
